prolly ewill. but after finals at 65 now I find being a full time student makes my on-line non-school time somewhat limited, not too many hours a day most days...

That's OK, many Moderators, as well as Administrators, also has a job to hold down, or school as in your case. BTW, I hope that you meet whatever your goals are from school. It's never too late to learn something new & rewarding.

This is a volunteer position, no one here would expect anyone to be a watchdog all day (or night) here.

Hey, I'm new here and honestly not a good contributor, but just a learner everywhere. I'm curious about this post. Why would anyone be interested in moderating? I believe mods won't get paid and this cannot be shown as a job, am I sounding odd? But that's what I understand. Could you explain me the advantages of being a Mod? I found some people who are blindly interested in moderation. Your explanation will help me to understand things that's otherwise not gettable anywhere.

As I explained above, it's not hard, & you're correct, there's no pay. However, you'll gain skills that you won't elsewhere.

Moderators looks for spam postings, sometimes has to respond to threads that involves name calling (flaring) & trolling posts. As well as check Who's Online to see if spammers are on the forum. Action should be taken in all of the above instances, depends on several factors & committed offense.

And should also participate in the forum threads, however I prefer to see if other members responds first. That's what we want to see, is members assisting fellow members. It's still quite fine to participate & even create your own threads when needed.

Sort of like being a referee. One isn't tied down to a set number of hours per day, take it at your pace. It's easy to get burned out spending 6 to 10 hours daily on the forum, an hour or so per day is fine.

One thing that you will have to watch for & it's a forum rule anyway. Oftentimes, a new member will PM a moderator with a question that should be posted on the Forum for all to see & learn from. It's up to the Moderator to enforce the rules & direct the member to do so.

Really, it can be fun, as long as you don't allow yourself to become burned out.

Cat, it will be interesting to see what mod's basically do. Whether they are school kids, in high profile jobs, work at home preneurs, techsavvy, etc., But whatever it is, I believe one should be passionate about the forum niche to volunteer and do all the stuff you said. It's too much task even to read, atleast for me I see why Mods look tough. Kudos to the moderators!

It certainly can be challenging at times, & it does require a fair amount of reading. There are some things that I cannot go into detail about, those things are really no big deal, but are still confidential (sort of like employer/employee issues).

As I noted above, the main thing is sometimes getting burned out. Having less than optimal health can easily trigger this, combined with spending way too much time behind the monitor. These days, I spend less time than I once did here, not because I don't want to, but have other things to attend to, much of which is personal (nothing against anyone here, personal means just that). Plus, too much time behind a computer often results in self-neglect. It can be just as, if not more so, tiring than a physical labor job is. When one is falling asleep most nights behind the computer, many in the middle of a posting, that's not good. That was once the deal with me, but not any more.

Plus, Windows 8 (or Windows altogether) isn't the only OS that interests me, I'm a fairly experienced Linux Mint user, which does take a fair amount of "hands on" training to learn. I'm not the typical Linux user who bashes Windows on their fourms (I seldom even participate on them for that reason), I just like a challenge in computing. Linux gives me that, for free, except for the blank DVD to burn a install disk with. It is good to learn new things, the brain needs exercise, as does the body.

Being a moderator isn't hard, as long as you're willing to learn. I was fortunate enough to have two very skilled moderators to take me under their wing & taught me enough to get me going. It would be my guess that's how the majority of moderators begins out.

I can understand that it's not for everyone.

    Best of Luck,
    Cat

This definitely isn't an easy job to to do. It requires loads of reading a reporting and reading and more reporting.

Maybe the request is not even available anymore, when I see the date of the penultimate post.

The number of computers that you have, is not a criteria for being a Moderator. If it were, I would have been a Mod a long time ago. I have 10 running computers in my house, at this time. I run XP, Win-7, Win-8 and Win-8.1 all on different PC's. I even have one OLD PC with Windows ME on it. lol

First you need to get your feet wet, by helping people with their problems and not being afraid to ask questions as well as answer them.

I had been on this forum for a year or so, left for a while and then came back, before being asked to be a moderator, by the forum Admin. I didn't ask for this job.

I've been asked to Moderate on other forums as well, but I've always declined. One is enough for anyone. You can't be effective if you spread yourself too thin. I work five car forums and over a dozen PC forums, but I am only a Mod on this forum.

    Happy Computing
