I honestly don't remember Cat. First install of win8 RTM shipping I formatted a partition then put on win7 then mounted win8 on another win 8 then put it atop the win7. Later I made some recovery DVD. They will install, I did that too. But I can't remember if my key requires a win7 if there IS no win8 where I am putting the DVD win8. It does NOT need win7 if win8 RTM shipping was once first installed in the same place, but as to a clean partition with NO OS whatever, I just don't know as I have NOT tried that from the DVD (don't have enough drives and partitions to set up an OS entirely for the heck of it, plus it does take some time lol.

I ran the Upgrade Assistant from 8 RP directly, after seeing where others had done the same, & didn't have to "give up" their previous OS. Can't recall exactly who it was, but that member felt the same as I, if I had to give up Win 7 to get 8, I wasn't going to do it.

That night, I was reading where it was allowing RP (& CP) users to upgrade/clean install from there, so no prior COA was required. So in theory, one could have built a PC, ran 8 RP, & got a new OS for the same price, being that no prior COA was asked for, at any time.

The really great thing about the $39.99 deal, that the more expensive System Builder version doesn't get, is portability. Say for instance, my Windows 8 Pro desktop goes up in smoke. I can then take that same OS, & reinstall it on another qualifying computer. There was an issue that I had to contact MS directly about, I created a thread about it, while on the phone I asked, & was told that I could.

On topic, the OP really needs to return to this thread & explain the type of install done. Without that info, there's nothing more that I can offer. Obviously, the install is corrupt, it's a matter of how it was installed that will lead to a solution.

For the record, I'm going to say, if the OP has install media (a DVD or Flash drive media), a clean install is in order. There is no black magic to that, it simply works & is the best way for most users to go.
