I'd go for the Classic Style, it's much easier to navigate for me.

I will agree with nanikore's comments. If I am on a computer with a small screen I prefer classic. However if I am using my 24" monitor I want Metro (or Modern!)

Classic Style all the way. No doubt that Windows 8.1 is going to have that & a good possibility of reintroducing the Start Menu.

All of this "Modern" stuff looks too "Appleish" to me. It's not what MS has made their money on & forcing it down all of it's customer's throats is exactly why Windows 8 sales are stale. Many current Windows 7 users will be still running it until the year 2020, long after 8 is forgotten.

MS is setting itself up for one huge failure, hopefully Windows 8.1 is going to address all of their customer's concerns, then sales will resume.

Some of the Apps on Windows 8 I like (Weather App). I know that seems like a foolish reason to prefer W8 over W7.

I agree that this business of MS of forcing their customers to adapt to unwanted changes will backfire. Hopefully W8.1 will be the beginning of MS starting to listen to its customers again. Just think how many Windows 8 "sales" are because people are forced to buy new computers running W8. BTW, I want to see a real start menu return such as W7 has.

    I am glad that I am dual booting W7 & 8.

I never liked the Metro UI, so it's classic for me too!

I am now running Windows 8.1 as a VM. No, nobody got the old (Windows 7) start menu (back). But, there are a few things people did want that they probably will like, well maybe they will... some are hard to please.

    1. Can be told to boot to Desktop.
    2. Can toggle between Start & All Applications screens
    3. Can make the Applications display by Name.
    4. Can have applications show (1st) instead of Start.
    5. Shutdown & Restart can be found on the Power Users menu
    6. Some of the navigation may be felt to be generally more appealing.
    7. Having consistent background across all screens is nice.
    8. A start button on the Taskbar.
    9. Not a slew of Tiles on Start; things, instead, can, still, be told to be there.
    10. 4 digit PIN to sign-in.

Personally, I think the start button is useless. It only allows you to toggle between metro and desktop...you can do the same thing with the windows key. Those that were crying for it are in for a big surprise when the find out it doesn't bring up the old 7 menu. The rest of the new features I really like...looking forward to the RTM being released.

Although, Jim, the fact that it can be made so the Start button goes to the ALL Applications screen DOES make it go to a complete 'start menu'. Before it only would take people to Start. And now the Start button is a permanent fixture on the Taskbar... not just a pop-up in the Bottom-Left corner. The All Applications screen is the same as the 'window' I had been offering people use in Windows 8. Now, it is not so necessary. But, it IS a start menu, just of a different type AND you can make it show by Name.

I feel that MS offered a happy medium with 8.1, neither MS nor users gets all each wanted to have. However, this setup isn't hard to learn w/o having to make modifications. I don't have Claasic Shell nor any other Start replacement added, nor even the main security app (Windows Defender).

I did add MBAM & SuperAntiSpyware as on demand scanners, as well as Firefox 22.0 & Opera 15 & still have slightly less than half of 32GB of the space allowed for 8.1 available. 8.1 is designed with SSD users in mind, many will be able to easily get by with a 64GB SSD, though 120-128GB ones only costs a few more bucks.

I'm well pleased with the default install of 8.1.

Some of my thoughts & observations in regard to Windows 8.1

Pretty much don't need to bother w/ the Applications folder/window on the Taskbar, anymore. Being able to hit the Start button on the Taskbar & > ALL Applications AND display them by Name... it really amounts to the same thing.

I, also, think well of having Shutdown & Restart on the Powers Users menu.

The consistent background across all screens will have widespread appeal. So will the 4-digit code sign-in.

    Cheers,
