Cool Re: Be Careful! Be VERY Careful!!

WELL, I'm still learning. Every day I power up the old W8 drive, I learn something new.
Like today, where I learned at least a half a dozen new things.
I may never be the ultimate Win-8 Guru, but I'm working on it anyway.

Hopefully, by the time the REAL version of W8 is on the table, I should be able to set it up pretty well.

That's great TM, as it's what we're all doing is learning & posting experiences to learn from one another. I'm ready to see June roll around to get my hands on Windows 8 RP, as well as Office 2015 Beta.

Still, as you pointed out, we all need to be careful about where we get software, not only for Windows 8 CP/RP, but earlier versions of Windows also. So far, I've had great success with File Hippo, they have that same VLC 2.0.1 for download. And have never received any type of virus from the site.

As always, one should read the EULA & make sure that any unwanted software, such as tool bars or home page re-directions are taking place. Seems that many free offerings wants to change the homepage to Ask.

Oh, I've been saying for a long time, "when you install any new software, read every line of every window that comes up, and UN-Check everything that you don't want". It seems that even the best programs, that we use every day, come with unwanted baggage. The ASK toolbar comes with many software titles. Weather Bug, a known spyware, comes with others. If you don't want it, or don't even know what it is, "UN-Check it". Better safe, than sorry!

This is an excellent pack of codecs, I've used it in the past, both on Windows 7 & XP, when changing from a CD ROM to a DVD/CD RW, it wasn't a plug-n-play type of hardware. Another forum member pointed me to this software for my new hardware, it made it work quite well.

Also, it's written by those where the Media Player Classic comes from, an option to those who wants to view DVD's w/o purchasing that pack from MS once Windows 8 is Retail. It's in the "Tools" section of the same link that Joe provided.

Free-Codecs.com : Download K-Lite Codec Pack 8.7.0 FULL, K-Lite Codec Pack 8.7.0 STANDARD, K-Lite Codec Pack 8.7.0 BASIC : K-Lite Codec Pack is a collection of codecs and related tools

Buried deep inside Win-8 is "Media Player". It's the one with the white arrow in the orange circle inside a box.

Once I went into "file associations" and associated all my A/V files with "Media Player" all I have to do is click on a file and it opens up 'Media Player' and plays the file, just like in XP. No need for VLC or any other 3rd party players.

Likewise, I installed "Foxit Reader" so I can read all my .pdf files.
I guess I'll have to install Office, with Power Point to read all my .ppp files. Eh?
Or maybe just MS's PP Viewer.

It looks like all things will be possible, for them that believes.

    Cheers Mates!

This may work for now, but remember, this is the full (Pro) version of Windows 8 CP, with BitLocker & Windows Media Center. Once it goes to Retail, all of WMC's functions may not work w/o a paid addon (codecs), or an app like Media Player Classic.

Microsoft breaks down Windows 8's Media Center upgrade path, Dolby codec support -- Engadget

You still may need, after all, to provide your customers with a fully working Media Player for Christmas.

But I AM using Media Player Classic.

I tried to install the K-lite pack for win 7 and it locked up, part way through the install. So I aborted that and tried the K-Lite Mega pack (for XP) and it installed all the way without a whimper.

I then played or watched all sorts of A/V files by just clicking on the file.

The K-Lite Mega Pack for XP was the one that I used, sometime back, when I upgraded my plain old CD player (no burner) for a DVD/CD RW on a Latitude C640. Still have the DVD/CD RW, but the notebook is history.

Wished that some type of extender cord was made, to use the native connection in my ThinkPad T42 (which has a DVD/CD player only). So far, all that I've found are USB adapters that may or may not work. For the prices that some of these adapters are (the quality ones), I could add a little & get a portable USB DVD/CD RW that could be used on all of my computers.
