How did it make your HDD un-bootable? I've used it for years, & never have been left with an un-bootable computer as a result from using it. All that it does is deletes daily garbage. There are a few advanced boxes that are left un-checked by default, it's up to the user to educate him/her self as to what those functions are for, and what it deletes. I go with the defaults on cleaning, choose a DOD wipe, it's over within a minute or so.

There are similar apps that probably does the same thing (such as Bleach Bit). I use that tool when using Linux, but haven't on Windows. Other apps, like the current Advanced System Care, has these options as well.

Now, there's a tool on it (CCleaner) that I use with caution, & that's the registry cleaner. Normally, as long as the computer is running fine, I leave the registry alone.

The registry cleaner on CCleaner has to be used judiciously. I also use CCleaner, BUT I only use the registry cleaner after I have uninstalled an app to see if there is any leftover stuff FROM THAT APP only to delete. I also have very up to date Images to fall back on if my OS becomes unbootable (Just made new Images yesterday). I use the temp file cleaner section along with others regularly, but the registry cleaner only after an uninstall.

I've probably been at this stuff way too long. Thirty two years is a long time to be mucking about with these dang 'puters. I'd get me a new hobby, but I don't know what to do. Knitting or bird watching just isn't my style.
Even hunting and fishing don't turn me on anymore.

So I sit here a lot, developing new things for the PC. Keeping my own PC, clean, lean, mean and running like a scalded dog is definitely 'My Thing'.

Over the years, I've tested dozens of so-called Cleanup programs. Some were just a waste of money, some a total SCAM and others were a total disaster. I have settled on those that do a great job, for FREE, wherever possible and "Do no harm".

I don't test anything on just one PC. I have 16 pc's here, of all makes and models and ages.

    Y'all have a great day now, Y'hear?

The quote is much easier to read now Doc. I did like the other color as well, but my "senior" eyes can read it.

Sorry to get off topic a little.

Yeah, the yellow lettering was OK for the Metro background, but, in the classic theme, it don't fly.
Yellow lettering on a white background is nearly invisible.
    Sorry about that!

I have yet to go through Win-8 to find all the places where the OS saves its junk.
Once I identify a folder with junk in it, that will be added to my W8Cleanup.bat program.
    It's a work in progress.

EDIT: In my work, as a Computer Technician, many years ago now, I identified junk file buildup as being one of the main causes of computer slow-down and eventually computer failure.

For many years now, I've been adding my own Cleanup batch file to my customer's Startup Folder, so they get a little "Free Maid Service" every time they boot up their computer. It really helps to keep down the Bloat of junk files on the hard drive.
