Default Windows 8 won't recognize the flash drive

    Hi all,

I am using windows 8 release preview. Everything works fine except one problem. It won't recognize the flash drive--which is where I backup all my files?

How to I get it to recognize the drive so I can save files to the flash drive?

    Thanks for your time.

    Two things:

    1) are you sure this Flash Drive is working

    2) a Flash Drive is not necessarily the safest place to back up data to. These drives can fail without warning leaving you in the dark.

Do you see anything about loading S/W for the Flash Drive when it's plugged in? When it's plugged in can you see it in Files Explorer?

i dont see any USB drive in Windows Explorer or Computer. I have tested on windows 7 system, it works. So I judge the flash drive is ok.

There may be a problem in your USB controllers. You might open device manager and delete all the USB controllers, then reboot and let Windows rebuild the drivers for these. If this does not help then I would suspect a corrupt installation. Did you get the ISO file from a reliable source? Did you burn the DVD using a slow burn? Did you use a Custom Installation? I would start over with a new download from a reliable source.

Try Windows 8 RTM. RP is buggy.

Many people do not have availability to Win 8 RTM. They will have to wait until Win 8 is released.

The USB controllers are a valid issue. I had this happen myself. The USB Flash drive would show, under the drive listings, then I'd click onto the USB drive folder & Windows Explorer would briefly disappear.

Had to update the Renesas USB3 controller to solve the issue.

Sorry to say you have a problem that most likely the drive is dead. If you tried another computer and its still not being seen, you will have to contact the maker for replacement.

On a good note, most are guaranteed for life and "may" transfer your files to a replacement.

That's one reason that I keep several around & backup those with data that I regularly access. Fortunately, my luck with these devices has been better than what others have reported, I've only had one with issues, & didn't totally lose that one. It just became slow as dirt, some 16GB no-name brand that I got on eBay for $10 or so.

I believe it happened while trying to run Ubuntu on it, instead of the approved method, I did a regular install, fully formatting it as ext3 (a Linux format). It did install & run, though it started running slower in no time.

Yes, most brand name Flash drives are Lifetime guaranteed, though some Kingston ones are only for 5 years. I like the 4GB ones, which costs far less than a quality 10 pack of DVD's, for Windows 7 & 8 installs. It takes some issues, such as bad burns, scratched disks & coasters out of the picture & is a faster install.

However, not all computers are capable of booting from Flash media, or there's underlying hardware issues preventing it from being seen as a boot menu option. Most computers that's running 8 Pro today should be able to boot from these drives, some users has no choice (no optical drive). And sometimes, there's computers that can't boot from USB 3 ports, but can through USB 2 ones.

I can't get by w/o these drives. Having 4 working computers, it's time consuming to download updated apps for every OS or computer, I download them from one, transfer them to a Flash drive, & update the rest as I get to them.
