Default Windows 8 cannot find the wifi driver

    Hi there,

I am using windows 8 64 bit release preview. There is a issue that needs your help. Windows 8 cannot find the wifi driver even though I pointed it to the driver. I use a USB WLAN TPLink TL-WN322G+ (obsolete Atheros USB modem) wifi modem. I downloaded the driver files and pointed Device manager to the directory but it persists at being unable to find the driver files and install the driver.

Do you have any idea? Thanks.

This is a very low cost basic item. TP Link does show Win 7 drivers, but if it will not work properly I would replace it with a more full featured adapter. The latest driver was issued in mid 2010. I suspect this will not be updated for Win 8.

You need to download the appropriate driver setup file from the manufacturer website and install it in compatibility mode.

Please try the troubleshooting steps mentioned below:

    1. Download the driver setup file using this website

    2. Right click on the driver file. (The wireless driver which you are trying to install)

    3. Click on Properties and then click on Compatibility tab.

    4. Change the compatibility to match the drivers/software that you are trying to install.

Note: If you cannot find Windows 8 drivers, then try using the Vista (or XP) 32-bit drivers, for Windows 8 32-bit or the Vista (or XP) 64-bit drivers for Windows 8 64-bit.

    5. Under the Privilege Level, put a check in the box Run this program as an administrator.

    6. Click on Apply and then OK.

Try to install the driver now. Hope this will work.

Davem, glad that worked out for you. I have an Atheros internal wi-fi card, can't get the drivers installed in any compatibility more. It BSOD's afterward. But I'm glad it doesn't work, it's of the "G" type, I have 2 "N-150" USB wi-fi adapters that pulls in much more signals, & downloads completes faster.

I would like to remove the wi-fi card completely, & replace it with one of those USB3 adapters that plugs in the same place as the wi-fi card. Backups would be so much faster, in theory anyway. These type of cards aren't quite as fast as the built in ones, but certainly faster than USB2 is.

This day & time, the "G" type wi-fi cards should be avoided, if at all possible. Not only for the reduced speed issue, but from a security standpoint also.

Glad a reinstall solved your problem. Quite often these very strange problems can only be solved by a clean install.

    Hi,
Same problem with my new Netgear ND3700 modem - software loads but Win 8 will not recognize my network (I'm on my Win 7 drive in case you're wondering) so too when I try the LAN connection. Same again with my Epson Artisan 730 printer via ethernet cable.

I would start with looking at drivers. What kind of PC, specs? What Ethernet or wireless adapter? Have you looked for drivers for the adapter?

I'm surprised with the Epson printer. TM has a couple of Epson printers that worked with the default drivers. Check the Epson site for Win 7 drivers to see if these will work. I wonder if this is related to the LAN problem since you go through the Ethernet cable to the printer. This printer is capable of USB connection. Have you tried this method to use the printer?
