Re: Universal Serial Bus Controllers
When you say you restored the system, did you use system restore point? Did you refresh the system? Did you reinstall the system?
Have you tried going to Sony's website and try to update the drivers for it?

Re: Universal Serial Bus Controllers
After looking up your Sony on the link I provided, it seems it's not supported for windows 8 and there are know windows 8 drivers for your laptop. You might have to track down the usb controller from the controller manufacturer itself. Looks like it's an Intel and I start with the Intel auto driver utility.

Re: Universal Serial Bus Controllers
If the Intel Driver Update Utility (my first choice also) doesn't provide any updates for your system, then SlimDrivers is a good second choice. However, with SlimDrivers, only update what you need to, it'll likely offer a dozen or more updates, many of which you don't need.
If you have the JMicron Flash controller & an update is suggested, then go ahead & update that one. Many of the others gives little, if any better performance or improved function.
Once you install Slim Drivers & get what you need, be sure to disable it from starting up with the computer via the Task Manager (there's a Startup Tab to do so). Don't remove it anytime soon, as it contains backups of what was updated & may be needed. As always, either backup what you have (preferred) & create a restore point manually before running SlimDrivers.
Get Slim Drivers here. Make sure to get the Free version, that's what I linked. Decline any other software, including any toolbars that may be offered.

Re: Universal Serial Bus Controllers
Being that there's no response, the OP must have downloaded one of those 90 day Enterprise trials. Hopefully it has worked out & we'll get a response as to whether our advice was any good.
