Default Problem Installing Geforce GTX 280 Drivers

I installed the Windows 8_64bit Nvidia drivers (v296.17) and everything worked fine. Windows update showed a driver update for my card (WDDM v1.2) and I tried to install it. Halfway through the install my comp froze. I finally decided not to install the update. After restarting, I had to re-install the driver and decided to try the Beta driver (v301.42) to see if that would work (I heard it was working for other people). Unfortunately I couldn't get it to work, screen locks up. Now when I try to install the original driver (v296.17) the screen locks up too. Tried Windows update again, which installed this time, and now it shows my video card in the device manager, but I don't have the Nvidia control panel options anymore.

If all else fails, go to Device Manager and delete the graphics driver. Reboot Windows. Upon reboot Windows will see the graphics card and install the default drivers.

Have you tried a restore point before this all happened?

Unless you're doing something to manually create restore points, you might not have one when you need it.

I try to manually make a new restore point before I make any changes to the OS, like installing the video drivers.

That GeForce driver, previously mentioned, (296.17) is sort of an all purpose driver. It works for many different GeForce video cards.
It works great on my 210 card. But, so did the default driver installed by Win-8 when it first installed.

Going back a long ways, it's always been advised to NOT accept any driver updates from MS. Always get video and other drivers directly from the manufacturer.

    Cheers Mates!

Phas3Zer0, have you tried using the Device Manager function to update the driver? By opening the Device Manager (after unzipping the file) & pointing it at that folder to update the device from? I've had success with this method a few times, but it didn't work every time.

    Still, it's worth a shot.

TM, on a Retail OS release, what you're saying is true, as far as drivers goes & I stand with you on that. But Win 8 CP/RP are beta OS's. Many hardware devices doesn't have Win 8 drivers yet, that's why we have to get drivers from MS (for now).

But I have no problem with it, as MS is doing a better job than AMD does on my graphic drivers. Back on 02/29, when Win 8 was at CP, the MS graphic drivers were better than what came on the desktop back in 2009. It shipped with Windows 7 x64, I've applied most every new graphic driver available, I can tell no difference than when new.

Windows 8 CP changed that. This is my opinion, I hope that MS continues to write drivers for my ATI Radeon 3200 HD card, as they put AMD to shame when it comes to making drivers for my card. And many of these cards are still in use today, especially on cheap HP AIO desktops produced around the time of Windows 7's release.

I will never, allow me to repeat, NEVER, buy another computer with an AMD video card installed, & it's also unlikely that I'll buy one with another AMD CPU also. Intel produces superior CPU's, & NVIDIA kicks AMD's butt!!

For much less than many of AMD's high priced cards, there's a mid priced NVIDIA card that will equal, if not outright beat it.

I tried doing all of that. Completely uninstalled the video card drivers and when I try Nvidia drivers it doesn't detect my card... When I restart it will automatically install Windows drivers for my card so looks I'm stuck with it for now.

Cat, It sounds to me as though this OP is having the same type problems with his Nvidia card as many others have with ATI cards. I have an ATI card in my laptop and have no problems with the graphics on my laptop.

It does still appear that ALL graphics cards are having hiccups with Win 8 RP. I am not surprised. The old adage with graphics cards was that "If it ain't broke don't fix it!" Often people recommended not updating graphics card drivers if your present driver was working to your satisfaction. It seems this is carried over to Win 8 as well.

Since this OS is still in beta, and it appears the graphics drivers offered by both Nvidia and ATI are having problems, you might be better off sticking with the default drivers for now. Remember, this is a beta OS and as such there will be problems. If you use apps that are very graphics intensive or are a gamer needing the most out of your graphics card, you might be disappointed.

I believe the developers will catch up eventually, but for now you might be out of luck.

After considering all of the posts of this thread, I feel that it would probably be best at this time to stick with the MS supplied drivers for Windows 8 RP. I know that NVIDIA did release Win 8 drivers, but a couple of members has had issues installing them. This will probably be fixed in the upcoming weeks (hopefully).

Remember, it's still probably over 4 months before Windows 8 becomes Retail. Meaning that until then, Win 8 RP is still in development. It would be my guess that by mid to late September, most devices should be working, that will work with the OS. This isn't limited to graphics, but other devices also. Like my built in wi-fi on my desktop PC, it worked fine on Windows 8 CP, no driver will make it work with RP.

Still, with my desktop, I stand by my prior statement, AMD couldn't produce a Windows 7 driver that made my desktop graphics look as good as either Win 8 CP or RP has. Hopefully, MS will continue to provide the current driver after Windows 8 Retail availability, if I'm forced to go with an AMD driver of lessor quality, it will have a great impact on my decision to purchase Windows 8, not just myself, but others also.

I'm not going from a crystal clear screen to a blurry one.

I finally got the Nvidia drivers to work. Decided to give it another try today and it worked. I don't know why, I didn't do anything different than before.

Glad to hear that, Phas3Zer0! NVIDIA did release those Win 8 drivers before Win 8 RP was released.

Who knows why they didn't install the 1st time, the good thing is now you have it right. Which brings to mind, given all that you went through to install this driver, now's a good time as any to backup (image) your HDD. This way, you'll have a good fallback point, if something were to happen.

    Best of Luck,
    Cat
