In Windows 8 go to Search and find Device Manager. You should see your unknown network adapter with a yellow warning sign next to it.
Right click the device and select Update Driver Software... which will bring up a dialogue box. You'll have two options, you want to select Browse my computer for driver software.
Next you want to select the option Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer. Wait for the list of devices to load.
Now you will need another computer, smartphone or tablet with an Internet connection to do a search. In my case my specific TP-Link card was a TL-WN951N v1. You simply Google "<your specific model> chipset".
In my case the TL-WN951N has an Atheros chipset. In the list of manufacturers on the left scroll to Atheros Communications Inc. (or whichever chipset manufacturer provided the chipset for your specific card) and then on the right scroll down until you find the card you have, in my case and in the case of the provider of the screenshot above a TP-LINK Wireless N Adapter. Select this and hit Next.
This should successfully install the correct drivers.
