Default Re: Windows 8 driver for HP LaserJet 1012 Printer

I can personally vouch that Kodak's AIO printers are compatible with Windows 8, as that's my printer (Kodak ESP 3250 AIO). The Full program for the printer installed on the very first attempt, on 02/29. And has received two firmware/app updates since, direct from Kodak. Everything the printer is designed to do works on Win 8.

It's not an expensive printer, but it does all that I need of it, & has the lowest cost of ink replacements (brand name ink, I don't mess with refurb refills) of any printer that I've owned. Prints pictures as good as the chain drug stores does, either directly from the printer, or the computer, if touchup is needed.

Windows Update installed the initial print & scan drivers, then directed me to the Kodak site for the full install package (recommended, but optional). On Ubuntu 12.04 LTS/Linux Mint 13, all that's needed is to plug it in to a USB port & turn it on, it shows as available for use after a minute or so.

Note that I'm not a Kodak salesman, I'm only reporting that the printer has installed & running perfectly on two separate computers running 8 RP, & CP prior. That was a shocker in itself, I didn't expect to have full function on 8 CP, but I did. So that's four generations of Windows that it runs on (XP, Vista, 7 & 8). For $99 + tax, printer, starter inks & 30 pack of genuine Kodak photo paper (4" x 6"), I felt it to be a good deal. I've noticed that the newer generations costs less at Wal Mart (budget model, like mine is).

I wished whoever tossed the printer that TM mentioned did so by my door, now having 4 working computers, could use another one. May have to consider upgrading my router to one that has a USB port for printing access to all computers.

Print driver does not change much when you migrate from Windows 7 to Windows 8. go to hp.com website and click Support to search for driver.

Good Luck on that one! My HP AIO desktop shipped with Windows 7, but the only driver support that I have is from MS. None of the original drivers works, no matter what mode I've tried to install with.

HP only wants more cash from it's customers.

I traded in my HP Photosmart Premium AIO printer because of the fact that HP will not update the drivers for it. My new printer is a Canon MX892 AIO which runs beautifully on Windows 8 RP.

I do run Windows 8 RP on a HP dv4-2160us laptop. It does run fine but as Cat pointed out none of the HP drivers will install. The MS drivers are making it work.

The bottom line is stay away from HP products until/if they start updating their drivers for new OS's. HP really wants people to throw out a perfectly good computer and printer designed for a previous OS and buy new, compatible products.

    I won't play this game!

Neither will I, Duffy! This is the LAST HP that will enter my door. If they chose to, they could supply drivers to work with at least the next available OS. But they won't. They won't even give me an updated BIOS to upgrade my CPU to a hyper-threaded one, though I know that they have such available.

Thing is, my MSI notebook shipped with a driver CD included. With that, & no special actions needed to do so, I could install ALL of my OEM drivers & apps. Every last one of them, even Norton Internet Security if I wished.

If one OEM can do this, the rest can. For these corporations, this isn't rocket science, they have the available resources. They are in the never ending chase of the almighty US dollar. For those in this practice, including HP, I don't expect it to change.

Cat, I have a webcam on that laptop. Several times I have tried to download the HP Windows 7 driver for it. The last time I tried it in compatibility mode, 1st attempt was based on XP SP3 and the last attempt was made on Windows 7 mode. It failed to install both times. Then I received an error message saying the program is incompatible with Windows 8. Bottom line is I have a non-functioning webcam on that laptop right now unless I reinstall Windows 7 on it.

My former HP printer would only print not scan with the MS drivers installed. I try to scan all my docs into the computer to get rid of clutter and safety as well. For me not having the ability to scan was the last straw. I held out some hope that HP would issue a Windows 8 compatible driver after Windows 8 GA (10/26). But I came to the conclusion that I am deluding myself. My new Canon is a much better printer.

I agree Cat that if HP wanted to issue new drivers for Windows 8 they easily could. Why do we have to wait on what could be a false hope that HP issues new drivers on 10/26?

It's all about boosting HP's profits, im afraid. I know it has been stated on this forum before but MS should have bought HP's computer division while they had the chance.

BTW, my Canon printer likes ink. What do fellow forum members think about using 3rd-party refillable cartridges on it?

Duffy, if you can get them refilled locally, it may be worth trying.

My luck with refurb inks were bad, no matter the source, be it eBay, Amazon, other online ink dealers & even local office stores. Some had been reused numerous times.

They didn't last as long, some refused to print even half full, & forget letting them set awhile w/o using it. They clog. I won't buy anymore of them, they are a waste of money.

Some Walgreen's stores refills certain brands of inks for a fixed price.

Thanks Cat for replying to my post. I am thinking of buying refillable ink cartridges and bulk ink to do the job myself. My concern is that the bottles of ink might go bad after sitting around for a up to a year. Here's a link to what I am thinking of buying. Ink-Refillable-Cartridges-For-Canon-MX712-MX892-MX882-MG5320-MG5120-MG5220-IP4920-IP4820-iX6520-Cartridges-CLI-225-PGI-226-Need-To-Install-The-Canon-Chips-Medium-To-High-Volume-Printing Any comments would be appreciated.

I've seen these ink refill kits, but have no experience with them. Looks like a great value for the money, make sure that all instructions are followed.

And make sure there's a money back guarantee on the product. Use a charge card or PayPal for consumer protection, if possible.

TM and I have had great success with InkSell.com. Probably not as cheap as refillable ink, but not nearly as much of a problem and/or potential mess.
