Hi,
I've installed the Windows 8 Release Preview on my desktop PC. Every time I try to shut down it comes up with an alert box message saying 'There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive G:', with the title of the alert box being 'winlogon.exe - No Disk'. The options to click are 'Cancel', 'Try Again' and 'Continue'. Eventually it will start to shut down if I keep clicking continue (new alerts pop-up with different drive letters as I do this). However, what eventually happens is Windows 8 shuts down but the computer itself does not (screen is blank but computer is still powered on).



Has anybody else experienced this?

I have seen this type of behavior before, but not on Windows 8 CP/RP, mainly on XP. Have you ran a full virus scan with Windows Defender or Malwarebytes?

Thanks for your help, but I've only just installed Windows 8 RP and it did it the first time, so I highly doubt it's a virus.

Then a corrupted download/install, mabye? Did you check the download with a hash checker, like this one? You still can, if you have the ISO image. Click Properties, there's the chance to check the hash, which will take a couple of minutes on this large ISO. On the original download page, the sha hash was listed (that long string of numbers & letters). If the compared file doesn't match the hash, something's not right.

This software must be installed to do the check, it only takes a few seconds to do this. It's also the first step in making sure that you have a clean image.

The use of a download manager is highly recommended with an image of this size, to prevent corruption of the ISO due to breaks in connection while downloading.

I've done that, and it says the Sha 1 hash for my iso is 37BFDE7375422B0A21364BB94B4EC29E6E9F81A7.
Whereas, Windows says it is 0xD76AD96773615E8C504F63564AF749469CFCCD57.

Should they be the same. I looked at the hash on the iso download page, whereas I downloaded it through the installation manager.

They should be identical. My Sha 1 Hash was identical to the posted number on the download site. Something did not download properly. You will have to download the ISO file again from one of the sites I posted in my original stick thread, check the Sha 1 Hash, and if correct burn the ISO file to DVD.

Since we are so early in this beta testing you should not have much lost time. The problem must have come about with the download manager you used. I would download directly from the approved site. My entire download was less than 10 minutes. This will obviously be determined by your download speed.

The value should match that on the download page. Did you get it from here:

Looks like you got the 32 bit version & it matches. There are different hashes for each. Did you mean to install that version? If so, did you burn the ISO slow with an app such as ImgBurn?

Hi again, thanks for your help everyone but I have figured it out now after finding someone had posted the same question on another board. The answer is that it can be a problem with this version of Windows if your computer has a built in SD card reader. Many people have reported having this problem with the RP even though the didn't with the CP. The temporary fix is to disable the SD card reader drivers in the device manager, which I have done and it now shuts down properly. Hopefully Microsoft will release a fix though so I can actually use my card reader.

To answer your questions anyway, I downloaded it from the official website using Microsoft's Windows 8 setup tool, but asking it to download an ISO rather than installing using the setup software itself, then burned it to DVD. I definitely got the 64-bit version, which is what I intended to get, as when I look at the system info in Windows 8 it says I am using Windows 8 64 bit.
