Default Big Warning for anyone using Windows 8 RP

    Hey all

First of all, I have been using Windows 8 since the CP as my primary OS. Of course by doing this I am recognizing the risks linked to this as it is still a beta OS.

Thing is, I am one of those who absolutely love the OS and actually finding it much faster and efficient resource-wise than Windows 7 on my 2 years old laptop.

I've installed Windows 8 CP and RP both on day 1 on my work laptop. I am in IT and have a lot of programs installed on it, all fully compatible with it.

But there is a big big BUT involved in this. Do no under ANY circumstance install a 3rd party antivirus.... I've learned this the hard way on the RP... First I tried to install Bitdefender 2013 beta (itself a beta...) but supposedly compatible with Windows 8. Result? My network card got disabled and I was not able to turn it back on. Upon restarting my laptop, it wouldn't boot again. Trying to repair Windows, using the new refresh function and so on did nothing. I actually had to format my hard-disk again...

Next and even worse, a week ago I wanted to clean a USB drive which had been infected with viruses. Windows Defender did the trick but for some reason I wanted to be even more thorough and decided to try an online scan from various antivirus websites. The one that literally KILLED my laptop is Trendmicro... It was just an addon being installed in Firefox but it was enough to give me a blue screen IMMEDIATELY after the installation was completed. Again reboot failed, refresh didn't work, repair took a couple hours and didn't work. I actually had to open my laptop, remove my harddisk and put it in an external enclosure in order to recover all my files before formatting it yet another time....
In my case, it is actually something I enjoy doing, being it part of my field, but I definitely want to warn others who might want to attempt to install an antivirus NOT to do so. It's reall not worth it. For now, Windows Defender does the job quite well and in any case like the moderators here always suggest, do not use Windows 8 as your primary OS if you don't know what you're doing or if you're not ready to face the consequences...

But definitely give it a try on a spare PC/laptop. It rocks! Aside from the issues with antivirus softwares, I found the OS to be super stable aside from a few problems with the graphic card which were solved with the release of the latest driver (NVidia R302 drivers releases a few days back)
The OS gave a 2nd life to my laptop which is more responsive and faster than it ever was on Windows 7... It's a Lenovo with 3Gb ram, i3 CPU... I have installed on it MS office, SQL Server 2012, Business Objects, some reporting tools and an ERP application... All working fine without a single bug.

Nick, Welcome to our Forum. It's nice to see yet another pro IT person second our recommendations on how to use Win 8 RP (as a test bed, not as a primary OS).

I am not sure what is going on with your installation as you have obviously installed properly and re-installaed at least twice. (Is there any chance your ISO download might have been screwed up? Did you check the Sha 1 Hash?) Several others in this Forum have installed other AV apps successfully. (I have not, I use WD successfully) TM uses AVG and Cat uses either Eset or Avast.

Others have used different AV apps as well. Your case is the first I have seen with this problem. I guess I do not have any suggestions on fixing your problem, although from my perspective if WD is working well, it's not really a problem.

    Hey Ted

I am sure other AV apps might work well but I am honestly not taking any chances anymore... I am quite happy with WD. I'll try other apps on the RTM...

Sounds like a plan. I am hoping MS releases an update to Win 8 RP that installs the RTM code. That way we can test the final code before Win 8 is released officially.

I'm running ESET Smart Security 5 on Windows 8 RP with no issues. However, when CP was released, Avast IS 7 gave me problems with it's firewall, so I removed it & received a refund.

However, until I moved RP to this HDD, Avast 7 AV Free worked fine. Haven't tried any others out yet, as ESET has served me well for almost 2 years now. I had to go through some red tape to allow another install for Windows 8 RP, which is why I ran Avast instead.

My suggestion to anyone who wants to run an AV/IS suite, download & install a Trial version first. Many has a 14 to 30 day trial, some has 90 days. That's plenty of time to evaluate what will & won't run on Win 8 CP.

Nick, glad to see that I'm not the only one who sees Win 8 RP run like a champ on older, lesser spec, hardware. My desktop PC is 3 years old, has felt like a new one, since installing both 8 CP & RP from Day 1.

Glad to see that you like the OS, & look forward to seeing you again in our discussion.
