No problem, thanks for your help. I've got a usb sd card reader that I can use for now - I realize that Windows 8 is not yet a finished product and expect it not to be perfect.
There are just too many separate devices in use for MS to load all those drivers by default. Hopefully as we get closer to the final release more drivers will be showing up, if not from MS then from the device manufacturers.
I understand Microsoft can't load devices for all drivers by default, but in my case the driver itself actually seems o work. There is some issue with shut down that was not present in the consumer preview, Microsoft themselves must have changed something from the cp to the rp to cause the error.
This might be something that you could provide feedback to MS about. They seem to be very responsive to feedback, not necessarily giving you personal help, but in general using this feedback to correct found problems.
FYI: insert Win 8 ISO Into CD\DVD Drive. Shutdown completely, restart pc. Worked fine for me. (Try the Simple things first) Info from: Get error LOGON.EXE fails when logging out of Windows 8 Release - Microsoft Answers
Indeed a complete Custom Re-Install often fixes these strange problems. It's been almost 2 months since this was originally posted. I would suspect the OP has solved his problem.
Thanks Stef, I will try that. I didn't think of that because I presumed it would be installed correctly since I did a fresh install from the iso dvd. I have not yet solved the problem Ted, but I haven't been posting here because most of the time I still use Windows 7. When I do use Windows 8 I've temporarily solved it by disabling my sd card reader in device manager, a permenant fix would of course be nice but I've accepted that this is the release preview. If this fix does work though, I can't see the average user doing that when Windows 8 is released to the world.
Silly me, I did not look to see that you were the original OP.
