    Default Firefox freezes, not responding

    Hi all,

I always use firefox. I noticed that there is a bug on firefox. It often freezes. It says not responding. I cant do anything except click the icon "X" to close it. After I click icon "X" to close it, it says:

    "firefox is not responding.

If you close the program, you might lose information."

Then it give me two options- close the programs and wait for the program to respond.

I select "close the program", it says:

    "firefox is not responding.

windows is checking for a solution to this problem"

But after serveral minutes, it is still there checking.

So I have to press ctrl+alt+delete to open the task manager to end the program directly.

This problem often appears. Do you have any fix?

I am presently using FF V14 beta. Seems to work very well.

Have you installed the latest released version of FF? I would uninstall FF completely, then download and reinstall the latest version. In cases like this often the installation is corrupt and a reinstall will fix the problem. Give it a try.

    Marty, welcome to the Forum!

It seems that the latest Firefox beta (version 14) runs well on some computers & not others. Weird, but true. It doesn't run good at all on my Windows 7 install, so I downloaded & installed the latest stable version (13.0.1) & all was fine. What the issue was with 14.7 was, whenever I went to the Firefox tab to select an option, some of that corner would black out.

I've had other issues with Firefox betas, so I'm sticking with stable releases now. I use my computers for many different things, I need a stable browser.

I do not use FF at all on Win 7. I had some issues with FF 13 on Win 8 RP so am testing the beta for that reason. On Win 8 RP, the FF 14 beta is running well for me. The only problem (I just encountered this this morning) was the Foxit Reader plugin crashed on FF 14. I will uninstall and re-install it and see if this works.

I don't know the reason, but when I updated Foxit Reader to the latest version, FF became buggy when opening PDF Links. Thought it was FF at first, so I removed it, no difference. Uninstalled the latest version of Foxit & re-installed the older, all was fine again.

The link to the Foxit Reader that worked well with Firefox is here.

    Download Foxit Reader 5.1.4.0104 - FileHippo.com

It's now actually 2 versions back now, but it's compatible with FF. Right now, I'm running FF 13.0.1 (the latest stable version) on all of my Windows installs. This includes Win 8 RP.

Seems that lately, & this isn't OS dependent, that these Firefox betas tend to have bugs in them, more than they used to. In the past, Mozilla was more dedicated to producing the best possible browser for it's users, & addressing particular issues with updates/newer betas. They played a huge part in HTML5 development. Here lately though, seems that Mozilla is doing all that they can to keep up with Chrome.

Anyone recall the "Browser Wars" of the late 90's? They've already began again. I have to wonder, what Firefox's Metro browser (yet to be announced) will look like?

    Hi all,

Thanks for answers. I am using 12.0. I have used this version for long time. Since I used it, the problem comes. Maybe this should be a bug.

I would definitely update to the latest version of FF. It is possible FF V12 is not compatible with Win 8 RP.

The version of Firefox that Ted linked (13.0.1) works well on all of my OS's from XP through Win 8 CP, it's the latest stable version also. I highly recommend that all users update to this version, as there are improvements, as well as security patches/fixes that version 12 doesn't have.

There is a more recent beta version, but experience may vary between users & even OS's/different computers. I used to automatically use all of Firefox's Betas, but haven't in the last year or so. I do try them out from time to time, though. The only platforms that I still use the latest FF beta on is XP Mode, which for me, is a test bed anyway.
