I guess you should be just glad that your Win 8 upgrade is running well coming from XP. Microsoft is releasing the Win 8.1 update free to anyone who already owns a genuine Win 8. I am just not sure too if it will work for those who upgraded from XP. But if it doesn't, it's out of Microsoft's hand. Your hardware will need to be upgraded as well.

We handled MANY complaints, back in the Beta Testing days, from people who tried to upgrade by loading W8 over the top of their previous, legal, OS. The result was usually disastrous.

Every W8 forum helper and even MS was saying to NOT do that.

Many years ago now, I got an XP upgrade disk and upgraded my PC from Windows 98 to Windows XP.
That was the very last time I've tried to do an upgrade. I had W-98 all backed up, just in case the upgrade went sour.

Now with hard drives being so cheap, (years ago, a 30 meg Seagate ST-4038 cost $799 usd) it's better to put a new OS on it's own Hard Drive and leave the old OS alone.
I've done that here. I have four OS's, each one on its own drive. It's impossible for one OS to futz with another, because only ONE is connected to the power and motherboard at a time.

I give new meaning to the term, "External Hard Drives". lol

Things like address books, Favorites, and data files can be easily copied to a flash drive and then transferred to a new OS.

Microsoft released an information for XP users regarding the Win 8.1 upgrade. And as I mentioned before, XP users are still in the game IF they meet the minimum hardware requirement.

CAT, that's been the best advise, going all the way back to Windows 98.

I did make the jump from 98 to XP with an upgrade CD, but I had 98 all backed up to a spare HD.
That upgrade went off smooth as silk.

Subsequent upgrades have not been so good, according to the number of people who have showed up on Internet Forums crying for help when their upgrade wiped out all their old OS and their data files.

I'll say this to the day they throw dirt on my coffin, "Want a new OS, then install it on a new Hard Drive."

I have four OS's here and every one of them has its own private hard drive. NO two drives are ever connected to the motherboard at the same time. My XP drive is the only one, mounted permanently inside my mid-tower case. The other drives I connect externally. When I get tired of playing with an OS, I just reformat that drive and put something else on it. Once a week, or sooner, I clone my main XP drive, to another hard drive. If something bad happens to my main drive, I swap a couple of data cables, boot up the clone and keep on Truckin'.

Cheers Mates!

#1, you cannot 'upgrade' from XP to Windows 8 except via a clean install.

#2. If one has Windows 8, doesn't matter what they had previously, they can take Windows 8.1

#3. If hardware is running Windows 8, it will run Windows 8.1
