So here's the thing. My old computer had a Windows Vista Home Premium operating system and this became like a comfy pair of shoes - I had the PC for 5 years. When it broke and I bought the new PC with Windows 8 operating system, it was like 'wearing a new pair of shoes - and I still haven't broken them in after 3 months.

With Vista I saved webpages through Google as internet shortcuts - these are all 1KB in size - to my computer 'C Drive'. This was removed from my broken PC and placed in a case creating an external hard drive. These shortcuts open up fine from my external drive.

When I say "open up fine" I mean, for example, if I've saved a person's social networking profile, the shortcut opens their profile and I can view every page of it.

What I'm trying to do now is save webpages I have viewed through Google Chrome on my Windows 8 PC and bookmarked, to my external drive. The only options available are saving as download.htm or complete webpage and I have tried both. The file type is fixed as "Chrome HTML Doc". When I have saved these, the file size is typically 28KB and not 1KB

When I open these saved pages on my external drive they open like a 'photograph' of the page displayed when I saved it. I mean it is not the profile which was saved, just the page I was viewing. When I open the bookmarked page on my Windows 8 PC it opens the whole profile. This is what I 'don't get', and guess it's to do with incompatibility between Windows 8 and Vista.

I have searched the internet for help, and spent ages trying different things but failed. Frustration has set in. I am hoping someone reading this will be the bearer of good news that I can save, for example, a social networking profile I have viewed through Google Chrome on my Windows 8 PC as an internet shortcut to my external hard drive, and explain step by step how I go about doing it.

Chrome acts just like a Virus, slithering in to one's PC unannounced and un-asked for.
I'm constantly deleting it from my customer's PC's, and they don't know what it is or
where it came from. Grrrrr!
So I won't let it anywhere near my PC.

I have only used Firefox, since its very creation, several years ago now.
It replaced Netscape for us who couldn't stand I.E.

If I save a website as a "Bookmark" (old Netscape terminology) I can go into "Show All Bookmarks" and then "Backup" and save all my bookmarks to any location I designate, from MyDocuments to an external drive. Those can then be Imported into any OS I choose. My W-8.1 now has all my Firefox bookmarks from XP.

In fact, I do save my bookmarks to MyDocuments and then back that up 'Daily' to both an external 1TB hard drive and a 32 gig Flash drive. Both are USB-3, so backups go really FAST!

The whole thing is VERY simple, so I don't understand your problem.
Please come back and talk to us about it. OK?

Cheers Mate!

Hello. Gosh, almost forgot I posted this and it's lucky I could remember my password for this site! This is not the issue it was at the time, but in due course I will study what you have posted, give it a go and maybe get back to you if I can't get it to work for me. Thank you.

I use Google Drive and Open Drives to store my documents. These are affordable and reliable.
