I am just using w8 for the past 2 days...changes were difficult to be discovered but in the end I liked it..
In the begining I couldn't download the apps updates (althought I was singed in with my hotmail account). Looking into this problem I made some changes in settitngs. One of them is that I erased history (simple) and the new Start Menu with the email, store, skype icons etc.suddenly changed. Most apps disappeared and I couldn't find them via search! I refreshed windows but nothing... So I reset my new laptop.. After that everything was ok and the laptop with w8 were working just fine...but I really worry about the problem that I faced and I want an advise in order to keep Start Menu as it is.. Is there a lock option? I don't know why it changed and I don't want that to happen again without my permission.

Hi natpol,

Welcome to Windows 8 Forums. Why you erased history in setting? My windows 8 works fine. I did not do any changes after installation.

I was just trying to facilitate the process of the applications' updates installation. Please note that w8 were already pre-installed in my new laptop. Also note that 2 days ago I downloaded the AVG antivirus and again the Start Menu changed (even though I didn't choose a shortcut to be created). It is now full of AVG icons. From now on I hesitate. I haven't downloaded anything because always comes the question: "Do you want that program to perform changes at your settings?" If I say yes maybe my Start Menu will change completely. So I always choose No and the downloading stops.I don't think that is a correct way if dealing with the problem. I want to use my pc like I used to without being afraid.

If you're using the Metro screen, and you install a program like AVG that has many different modules....every module will make another little box on the screen.
That's not an error....that's the way it works. Other programs with multiple modules, will do the same.

Do your installs and program working from your Desktop, like you used to on previous OS's. and you won't have the problems, you're complaining of.

Install the "Classic Shell" to your desktop and you can make it look like any previous OS that you liked.
Mine looks and acts exactly like XP-Pro.

Good Luck!

You can also right click the tiles and choose to Unpin From Start to get rid of any tiles you do not want.

Whew! I just downloaded and installed "AdBlock+" here on Windows 8.
Yes, I'm actually on W8 now and not seeing any ad's. That's just SO neat!
I understand the 'need' for the ad's, but I still don't like them.

My entire life here on 8 is centered around the Desktop, where I have Full Control.

The "City Lights" theme, makes my desktop really POP!
