View Full Version : Problem with Aomei Backuper on Windows 7/Windows 8 dual boot system

I've used Acronis hard disk software for years mainly with good results, but I can't afford an upgrade to the Windows 8 compatible version, so I'm trying the Aomei software.

I backed up the whole disk (both volumes) without a problem and then tried restoring the image to another similar HDD.

Then I removed the original HDD and replaced it with the copied one and now if I select Windows 7 from the OS selector screen, it starts loading the Windows 7 splash screen, but eventually re-boots.
However if I select Windows 8 to boot, all seems OK and the OS runs as it should.
Somehow the restored backup has messed up the Windows 7 bootloader?

I haven't tried anything clever yet, restoring MBR's etc. - I was just hoping the Aomie software would be a good viable alternative.

Anybody any ideas? - after all there's no point relying on hard disk backup software if it doesn't work - even if it is free!

Thanks,

I've seen this on some other forums, it seems to be inherent to the type of dual boot setup and where the MBR actually resides. Which as you know with the windows 8 boot screen it resides on that partition or HDD and makes it the primary boot OS. As of yet I haven't seen a clear cut answer but will keep a look out if one should pop up.

Thanks for that, by your handle it looks like you're used to trawling.....
Hopefully someone from Aomei will read the post and suggest a solution.
Thanks again.

Hello faulkn_c,

Sorry to reply you late.

And thanks "bassfisher6522" for your reply.

About this problem I felt sorry. Currently this version can not ensure that backup multi—boot system, and then every OS could boot after restoring. It can only ensure the current OS (which you are running to do the backup)can boot after restoring. We have the plan to optimize this function in the next upgrade. So if you want to do a schedule backup, this version can not achieve your goals.

If you just want to make a backup of the original disk, you can start from the original disk and then boot Windows 7, install AOMEI Data backuper (http://www.aomeitech.com/aomei-data-backuper.html) on this OS and then make a system backup of your Window 7, then restore it to the new disk (select the corrupt Windows7 partition as destination, to replace it).

In addition, we are upgrading this software. If you have any quesitons or suggestions please feel free to let us know.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Hi Kim,
Thanks for the reply, as I said I still have the original HDD intact, so it is not a disaster for me.
But this is disappointing, I had similar problems with Paragon software, so far it seems only Acronis can achieve a true backup of a dual-boot system disc - but thanks to "bassfisher6522" I'm looking at a couple of others.

Your Aomei software has great promise and I hope you can add this feature soon, as well as the ability to restore to smaller HDD's - if there is enough free space for the partition......

Will you post on this forum when you have an upgrade available? - as I'd really like to recommend your product!

By the way, I noticed another Aomei post "AOMEI Partition Assistant Professional Edition (Worth $36) Giveaway"
but I can't see if this has finished or not - I would have really liked a full licence.....

Many thanks

That is some great news...as I too am using this software. It indeed would be a nice, hell an awesome feature. May I suggest a video tutorial on the home page of the website to show the new users of this software how to actually use it. I find that more people are willing to try new software, especially if they've never used anything like it before, if there are videos to go along with the software. Something to ponder.
