Hello,

It would be appreciated if someone could help me.

My McAfee firewall keeps turning off whenever I visited like 2 or 3 pages, say I went to youtube.com, it would say the webpage cannot be displayed etc. I would turn on my firewall refresh it would be fine, but I would search another vid and oops! cannot display webpage. and this happens all the time and its getting ridiculous.

I've searched for a long time and found many people installed no antivirus on their windows 8. Is that safe? Can I uninstall this annoying antivirus?

Thanks for help.

Eknine, welcome to the Forum!

Windows 8 CP/RP ships with it's on AV/AM app built in, Windows Defender. Scan with it daily, especially a short one before shutdown. It's best to have a app like Malwarebytes installed as a "second opinion" scanner for the really nasty malware infections.

Evidently, McAfee's Firewall, just like Avast 7's, is NOT compatible with Windows 8 CP/RP, no matter what the ad/package says. Remove McAfee w/the proper removal tool, it's on this list.

List of anti-malware product removal tools - Microsoft Answers (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/protect_start/list-of-anti-malware-product-removal-tools/407bf6da-c05d-4546-8788-0aa4c25a1f91)

I'm running Avast 7 Free Antivirus on Win 8 RP, with the default Windows Firewall. So far, so good for me. My normal security choice is ESET Smart Security 5, which is compatible with Win 8 CP/RP, but I've ran out of installs on my current license (3PC's/1YR), so I'm using the next best option for my needs.

Hi Cat,

Thank you for suggestion. I will try Avast and post back soon.

I gave up on McAfee a long time ago. If you prefer, uninstall McAfee using the McAfee removal tool (http://http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe). When you do this, the default Windows Defender should be re-enabled and the Windows Firewall should be re-enabled.

Avast works fine on my Windows 8 so far. Thank you so much. I believe this forum will be the most popular among Windows 8 users.

Eknine, just to touch base with you, being that you're running Avast, make sure to open Windows Defender & turn it off. There will be a box that says "Use This Program". Uncheck it & save, then close it.

Just wanted to make sure that you're not running both at the same time. It was OK to do so with Windows 7, but this Windows Defender is different from that one.

Glad to hear that you're enjoying the forum, & hope to see you around.

Best of Luck,
Cat
