View Full Version : Windows 8 release
Hello everyone (especially Ted), I have and have had leukaemia, diagnosed in 2008, so I will have absences from the forum at times. However have just installed new release version but find I can't get rid of BING which I hate and also the windows media player does not want to open my DVD's so have for both reasons loaded firefox and VLC player. Do MS want to control the world?
Cheers Luke

Hello to you as well Luke. I hope everything turns out well for you!
Media Player was not designed for DVD playback in Windows 8 RP. You have to acquire the Media Center. (http://www.forumswindows8.com/media-center/add-media-center-win-8-rp-6596.htm) Be advised this Media Center will not be free when Win 8 is released this fall. Also at this point it appears that it will only be available on Win 8 Pro, but this might change. Who knows.
Are you talking about the Bing Bar? IF so you might be able to go to Control Panel, Programs and Features and uninstall it.
It you are talking about Bing search, go to the gear and Manage Addons. From here you can change the search provider (may have to add new providers first) and select which search provider you wish to use.
I also downloaded VLC Player, but have not installed it yet. I do not really watch DVD's on my PC, but who knows what the future will bring.
Again here's a good luck for you. Get better soon.

Huh? Say wot?
Windows Media player is working just fine for me. I put in a Donna Summer disk and WMP jumped right up, went through its little setup routine and then played the disk.
It's in there by default,,, why not use it?
I've not tried a DVD movie yet, but I will.
You might have to go into "File Associations" and point your file to WMP.

Yes TM, DVD playback is gone in Win 8. This article discusses it. (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2404028,00.asp) CD playback works fine.

Yup, I just went to W8 and tried..... Donna on CD played fine, but I could not get WMP to play any DVD, even with the latest k-Lite codec's loaded.
Another reason to NOT use W8. They're adding up fast. :(

The VLC player is supposed to do very well in Win 8. The article went a little further trying to explain the reasoning for this change. Personally I believe it's all economics. It costs MS money to allow DVD playback so they are going to charge extra to get Media Center. Plus Media Center (as of right now) will only be available in Win 8 Pro.
I generally like many of the free 3rd party apps anyway as they are generally more full featured.

TM :cool:TM, have you added the Media Center extension that Ted created a thread about? Here's the info & key, which is totally different from the RP install key.

Don't give up, TM! You're needed around here. I was beginning to feel the same way over the weekend, but with renewed interest, have hung in there.
