Unfortunately I need to upgrade my Vista OS at this time. I want to upgrade to Win 7. However I do not want to invest the $$ to do so if Win 8 is just around the corner. Does anyone know if MS will provide a free upgrade from Win 7 to Win 8 for those who recently purchased Win 7?

Thanks
John

I doubt there will be a free upgrade from Vista. Even with Windows 7 you would have to purchase it very very close to the Windows 8 release date to get a free upgrade. That would most likely [be] from a computer maker anyway.

John Bruno, welcome to the forum!

Even if you do buy a Windows 8 upgrade, once it's released, it's best to go with a clean install. There was a way to clean install Windows 7 with upgrade media, & it was legit. Hopefully that technique will apply to Windows 8 upgrade media as well.

There will probably be more info on this come early to mid summer.

You are always better off with a Clean Install unless your old OS is an absolute pristine install, and even then I would be very careful. How do you get an absolutely pristine installation of the old OS? By reinstalling it using a Clean install method, then reinstalling all apps and updates. Why would you possibly want to go through this just to upgrade to Win 8.

I would also suggest holding off until Win 8 is released to purchase it. If you absolutely cannot hold off for some reason, Clean install Win 8 RP when it is released in early June on a spare Partition and test it to find out how it works and how to customize it to your liking. Then when Win 8 goes on sale you can jump in with some knowledge of how to use it.

In short, we're months away from the REAL release of Windows 8, so we don't know for sure just what options for upgrades are going to come from Microsoft. Right now, it's a Crap Shoot.

As a Computer Tech myself, I'm curious why the big rush to change your Operating System (version of Windows) ???
What is your OS now and what's the problem with it?
You're not giving us much to go on.

John Why buy Windows 7 to upgrade to Windows 8? That's a lot of money spent. Soon after release, etailers such as Newegg.com will have Windows 8 retail packages, standard & Pro, in 32 & 64 bit flavors. If your computer is Windows Vista capable, it should run Windows 8, using less resources.

In the meantime, run Windows 8 RP, once it's released in June, to learn the OS. That will give you plenty of experience of the OS before it even launches.
