This is good for those who have notebook computers with only one HDD & plenty of CPU & RAM to spare (which I have both of). But it's not the optimal way to tryout Windows 8 CP, it never performed to my expectations. Functions that works on my "real" install, didn't with VBox. But, if one has no other choice, go ahead, just don't expect it to feel & act as the real deal.
The optimal way to do this, is to have a desktop PC, with 2 HDD's. After the ISO file is downloaded & written to DVD, or USB Flash install, remove the HDD that your present OS resides on. This 100% prevents the bootloader from being overwritten. Then do the install, afterwards, there's a function on all computers as to a boot option (which HDD or CD/DVD ROM to boot from). Use this, & select the drive where Windows 8 CP is installed. No problems.
If the user has a PC that has only 1 HDD, cannot add another for whatever reason, first off, BACKUP YOUR PC fully. This gives the user a fallback point to go back to. Then, using a formatting tool, as a bootable disk (Mini Tool Partition Wizard Home Edition is great for this), create a primary partition for Windows 8 (no larger than 50GB), optionally label it, then format it as NTFS.
This prevents having to format with the install disk, which will create an additional 350MB partition that may not be needed.
One can use VirtualBox for this, but performance will suffer.
