Regardless of source, as long as it's a known safe one, it's always best to run the latest version of Firefox (as well as other browsers) for security/performance reasons. And make sure that plug-ins are up to date. Silverlight is a common one, that MS Update doesn't keep updated, & FF will warn at times to update the plug-in. The latest version of Silverlight can be obtained here.

At one time, Firefox was a well known RAM hog. But that seems to be improving, the key being not to add excessive extensions (addons). Too many can easily cause poor performance, even on a high power computer. Install only the extensions that's needed, & those (that constantly uses resources when FF is running) that are only used occasionally, disable except for when needed.

This will help improve your overall Firefox experience.

In that same vane, Cat.... IE will let one choose Add-ons that are enabled or not and show which ones are slowing it down. Handy. Disable the ones that are RED & interestingly enough nothing will suffer if those are not running except, the browser's performance, as you eluded.

I noticed that box that shows up the few times that I use IE, but I have none, since removing Adobe PDF Reader & going with Foxit, that exceeds the time (the RED ones).

Since I don't use IE, the only addons besides Java, Flash & Foxit is GData Cloud Security, a free security plug in for IE & earlier versions of FF. My issues with IE are the lack of a native spellchecker (the only major browser that lacks this), poor adblocking at best & leaves way too many files behind to get rid of, even after only a few minutes of usage.

I use CCleaner to delete ALL temporary Internet files daily. Assuming that I use FF for 4+ hours & IE for only 10 minutes, IE has far more temporary internet files to delete than FF does. Why? Poor adblocking allows these useless files to pile up, I can see them, or portions of what they are, as CCleaner is deleting (overwriting) them. In fact, I just checked, since I only checked IE to see just what loads up at startup. The result of that less than 2 minute ordeal (IE-Temporary Internet Files 4616KB, 243files). WTF!!!!

I only checked to verify what you were speaking of & 243 files were generated? Less than 2 minutes? This is why, when IE was my primary browser, it took CCleaner 5 or more minutes daily to delete 6 to 10 hours of daily browsing. The time it takes using FF is only less than half of that, as less files are generated. Ads are files, each one of them, no matter how large or small.

But don't take my word for it. Run IE for 4 straight hours, & FF for 4 straight hours, both with the available adblockers on each, & you tell me which is using more, & taking longer to clean up behind. I run a DOD (3x) cleaning wipe with CCleaner daily & know the difference. BTW, Opera isn't much better than IE in regards to temporary Internet file buildup.

That's why I have my browsers set to delete cookies and history upon close. In IE I can specify delete everything except..... In FF, I have not found a way to delete everything except...... So I have to keep cookies and history to keep signed onto sites I visit, like this forum. unfortunately this keeps cookies and history for all else as well. In IE 10 everything except my home pages and my Forum and Lounge are deleted each time I close the browser.

Yes, Ted, that's 1 point I was going to make & also, IE10, unlike prior IEs has Spell-checker everywhere.

If you want it all cleaned out run CCleaner great way of cleaning out cookies and other stuff. You can get CCleaner from .com (Remove the from word and the spaces) :D Still gotta get 50 posts before I can post links :( but I am getting there ;)

If I could do this with FF, I would be happier using it. Ted, there is an option in FF's configuration that will help to accomplish what you want.

Go to Options, there are 8 across the top. Select Privacy. There are the custom settings you're looking for, under History. You can save History, not save History or use a custom setting. You can also tell websites you don't want to be tracked, just as in IE.

Unfortunately, when I check Clear history when Firefox closes, even when Active Logons is unchecked, the sites I sign on to are cleared as well. I have tried many different combinations and none seem to work except unchecking Clear history when Firefox closes. Unfortunately this also leaves other stuff there as well.

There are noticeable small differences. I do not see the problems with ads you talk about with IE 10.

If you have Adblock Plus installed on Firefox, you won't see the problem with the ads. Because for the most part, they won't be there. I tried to upload the CCleaner file to show this, but the program (I guess the forum software) is limiting the size of the attachment.
