View Full Version : Will there be a small installer to upgrade Win 7 to Win 8?

I tried Windows 8 CP on my MSI notebook a month ago as a dual boot (after imaging the drive). While Windows 8 CP did run decently on it, all of my hotkey functions were gone. This includes my 5 option power key, Turbo Boost for my i5 CPU, GPU Boost for my NVIDIA card, webcam access & more.
Is this small installer file that I've seen going to upgrade 7 to 8, while retaining my OEM functions? I've read that it will upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 8, after checking to see if the computer will run it (mine is only 1 year old). It would be fantastic for the final installer file to work, while leaving all of my Windows 7 options in place.

I believe that is what it is supposed to do. Be sure your Win 7 installation is pristine before the Upgrade attempt (You know the horror stories we have heard about upgrades as much as I have). Of course you will have an up to date Image of Win 7 so this statement is for others benefits.
Initially when Win 8 CP was released, I mistakenly went that route. Duh, slap my forehead! I did not have great results. But then again I had pointed to the Win 8 DP partition (Yes I know Drew, can't be done but it actually worked my friend, and others have had success doing it as well)
I have a long way to go before I make a final decision on whether Win 8 will end up on my laptop as my main OS, a long ways to go.

So do I, Ted. Windows 7 runs very well on it, especially after installing the ASC software. Being that Windows 7 is supported until 2020, & SP2 hasn't been released for it yet, I may just wait to see what Windows 9 (assuming that's the name of the OS) offers.
More than likely, by then, the Metro interface should be refined a lot more. This is a major change, just as Vista was from XP, it took the release of Windows 7 to really refine those changes.
But Windows 8 CP is far superior to any pre-release OS that I've ran, even though it's still in it's infancy.
I have no doubt that the finished product of Windows 8 will be installed on my desktop, though. As a totally clean install.
