No matter how I close down Windows 8, the position Windows 8 puts the icons is where the open with. EXACTLY WHERE I DON'T WANT THEM !
I have to move them ever4y single time I open up the comp. Is there a way to make them stay where I want them ?

Yes, two ways!
One, use System Restore to go back to a point before that problem started and....
Two, failing number One, then do a complete RE-Install of Win-8.
I've done #2 four times so far, to fix that same problem. I determined two possible causes.
The first one was "Flash" which I load along with Firefox.
The second one was one of the "Restore the Start Menu" add-ons.
Now I regularly make a new restore point before I load anything new, so if the new stuff buggers up my OS I can do a System Restore to make things right again.
Then every day or two, I make a new Ghost backup of my entire C: drive, so I no longer have to do any RE-Installs.
Good Luck,

Phil,
Which "icons", where?

I think I can answer that.........
On the Desktop, with any icon positioned AFTER the offensive program was installed, that takes away the ability of windows to save the desktop during shutdown.
In my own case, I suspect it was the program that I had installed to restore the Start orb and Start menu.
I've not installed any of those programs since my last re-install and the problem has not resurfaced.
So, at least for me, Problem Solved.*
*on Windows 8/DP, it was the routine to disable the Metro UI that did it to me.
Cheers Mates!

Sorry - otherwise engaged. (Foot in plaster !) I used a little German prog called "Icon Restorer" seems to be doing OK
Odd thing about System Restore, though. Doesn't seem to be working.
You could be right about the Start Orb prog. I tried one, didn't like it and dumped it too

Phil, Sorry about the foot.
I have read a lot about Refresh/Restore etc. I think at this early stage of the game, you might be better off with a complete Custome (Clean) re-install. I have also seen many problems with some of the initial and subsequent downloads. I would download the iso file directly from MS (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/iso), burn the iso to DVD and install again. This will give you a pristine installation to begin again.

As you were! (old Army saying)
With a brand new install of Win-8/32 on a laptop, I'm once again experiencing the failure to save the desktop problem. I make a new restore point (manually) before I do anything, now, just in case.
I've not installed any of the Orb Restoring programs and yet I've been hit with the failure to save the position of my new icons.
I'm narrowing down the problem to Win-8 itself, like when I change the size of the text on the desktop icons, or de-select the desktop transparency. I'm assuming or at least hoping that MS will discover this problem and fix it in the next release.
I'm continuing to experiment, to find the exact cause of the problem.
I'll post that info as soon as I have it.

IF, I had encountered a problem w/ Windows8 I would, certainly, mention them, share them.
So here are the problems I have run into, so far, whilst running Windows8 since Feb. 29th:

Did you write your problem list with invisible ink, or are you saying that you've had NO problems at all.???
Here's a test. Change your icon text size and uncheck Transparency. Then move a few desktop icons around and reboot.
If they are still where you put them, in the test, after a reboot, then you're not having the problem. But if the icons went back to their previous position on the desktop, then you DO have the problem.
I'm still trying to find out exactly which change causes the problem.
When I find it, and verify it, I'll post it.

Saying, had no problems, @ all.
Rt Clk Desktop > View & make sure the Auto Arrange is not checked.

I'm pretty sure that I am not the only person in the world who would experience the "Moving Icons" problem, if, anyone else does what I do, and make the desktop text larger, shut off 'Transparency' and install a theme.
These are things I would always want to do, and DO. After re-doing these things several times on my test PC, the icons are finally staying put. Go figure! So it's a Glitch I've not seen on Win-7, where I do essentially the same things.
Still a mystery!

Again today, I did another System Restore to get back to where my Icons would stay where I put them.
Since then, I've done two more system restores.
You can loose shortcuts, like to My Computer or Control Panel when you do a Back-Up like that, so I've started saving all my shortcuts to a folder on a Flash Drive. I can just copy and paste them back to the desktop after a System Restore. In fact, I've written an "Install Icons" batch file to do that for me.
I've pretty well narrowed it down to Desktop options. Some glitch in the OS is causing this. It never happened to me in any OS before. It seems to happen, every time I install the "City Lights" theme, which I actually downloaded from MS. Go figure!
More generic themes don't seem to have a problem.

Good for you, Drew.
But it hardly needs saying that it doesn't automatically follow that, because YOU aren't having problems, no-one else is......

I am having just minor glitches at this point. I am using this OS pretty much full time for all my work and it's performing quite nicely. Minor glitches with the browsers, both IE and FF.
It would be nice if many of the numerous small glitches are addressed by the Win 8 RP, which I suspect some will be. I suspect many of the glitches fixed will be with the Metro apps, which I do not really care about. I do have to say, I have been using the Classic Shell and have enjoyed using it, sorry Drew, but I have been. I still have all my other customizations set up, but do find myself using Classic Shell for Control Panel and Documents and WU. I still use my Shortcuts folder for apps and my Shutdown shortcut for that purpose, bot the Classic Shell has a familiar feel.
I do use the Power users Menu for Run and Search. I sometimes use Charms, but not often, and every once in a while go to Metro, but again not often.
Anyway, that's enough for now!
Phil,
You are quite correct & I am, certainly, aware of that. One might say the same about a certain car, motorcycle or many things. Actually, I've not had a lot of major problems of the years w/ other Operating Systems, either. Interestingly enough, because I saw, long ago, that people CAN have computer problems, I decided, maybe, I could be helpful. Ergo, I started an IT consulting & support company.
& TM, I could experiment, certainly but, maybe someone else will have an answer or solution for you, I hope... I don't have or use desktop icons, haven't for a very long time. But, what your experiencing is a curious issue, for sure.
As for the good-natured "sorry Drew" Ted, thanks, mate, for the wee chuckle you gave me.
I happen to be on my Win7 machine, right now and it looks quite 'Classic' (wink, smile)
Cheers,
Drew

Absolutely. But I have a friend who, if anything CAN go wrong, it does. A living Murphy's Law.
Another friend will fall in the Tyne River here and be pulled out seconds later with cans of salmon in his pockets. Not quite, perhaps but next best, no doubt.
Some do go through life swimmingly, and never see problems or very few anyways. Often they put it down to their own cleverness (not a dig at you by the way) until the pooey stuff hits the fan ! ;)

It is solved?
I think I've finally narrowed it down to adding a new Theme which also changes border colors, etc.
I installed the "City Lights" theme and after that any icons I put in a certain place, will jump to the left margin on re-boot. Icons that were placed before the theme was loaded, stay in place.
I can fix it, by going back to the simple blue screen with the Fish in the middle, rebooting, rearranging my icons, rebooting and then everything is OK again.
There are several themes that I've tried that do not cause the problem, but "City Lights" will do it every time. I can't swear to it, but I think I've seen the same thing on windows 7. City Lights is a MS theme written for Win-7. Go figure!
So for now, anyway, I'm considering this problem solved.
