View Full Version : Sound Driver problems
Hello everyone, I am a new member. I have an asrock motherboard with Via sound on it and it would appear to be impossible to get a driver for windows 8 consumer preview. Luckily I am retired but have honestly spent hours downloading, contacting asrock etc but no no no, I have to wait for a compatible driver to be written!!!!! At least it has got me moving around win 8 but I still can't find anything too fascinating about it apart from furiously clicking the mouse everywhere to get any icons that I need to appear. Poor old control, alt delete has taken a right hammering but been very useful. Would have been handy to have a proper guide produce in pdf.
Cheers, Lukw

Yes, drivers often need to be re-written when a new OS "breaks" something. When I installed CP my sound didn't work either, messed around with driver installs for a week to no avail. Reset the installation to pristine state and now sound works. Must have been a corrupt driver install first time around. You might try that as a last resort, but it sounds in your case a driver rewrite over time might well be necessary. As it is, my bluetooth chip isn't working even though CP has a native BT stack in it. So again, a wait is necessary (although Win 7 drivers did work).

by "reset to pristine state, I assume you mean you re-installed? Or is there a new feature in 8 I am unaware of.

Nope, didn't mean re-install at all. There is a new windows 8 reset feature, located under settings > General > Reset your PC and Start Over. And also, Settings > General > Refresh PC without losing files and settings.
I used the Reset feature which restored a pristine state, and it was then that my sound started working.
I have since tried the Refresh feature, which took about the same amount of time after restoring my files and settings. It uninstalled apps, but gave me hot links to the uninstalled apps so I could download and install them again.
Now if only Update would find me some drivers for my Bluetooth & 3G gobi modem I'd be a (more or less) happy camper.
Oh, also searching from the start screen under settings (not apps) for either option will also take you there.

interesting,, thank you.
Thanks to everyone on advice over sound driver
I at last have installed ok but had to be drastic and do a complete recovery of windows which brought me back to the basic installation. Windows did a high definition audio device for me which did not work so used original motherboard installation disk and asked to update driver which it searched the dvd for and DID and now sound has appeared!!
