Windows 8 have some issues with installation of the old drivers first download the driver for your USB adapter in this page (http://www.asix.com.tw/download.php), them go this forum (http://win8review.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=276) and follow the process.

This was a 6 to 7 month old post before Win 8 RP or even Win 8 CP were released. I suspect the newer beta fixed this problem.
