Is it need to backup my computer before upgrade to windows 8 84 bit from Win 7?

Because some unexpected problems or errors may happen and all pictures of my friends and family, all documents, music, e-mail may disappear in an instant. But i think windows 8 must have made a great improvement in this aspect and maybe there is no need to do that again.

any suggestions?
