Hi there,

Fresh install of windows 8 Beta 64 bit on my PC and every part works quite well but...

Is there a widows 8 driver for HP laser-jet 1012 printer?

Any help in this would be highly appreciated.

You can try to search in google, you will get a lot results. But you may need to install a driver for it first.

That was an awful help :(. I have the same problem and cannot figure out how to add that damn 1012 printer to Windows 8 X64. Google won't help anything and I'm clueless. Someone help please!!!

The newest drivers (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=306510&prodSeriesId=377934&prodTypeId=18972&taskId=135&swLang=8)I can find for this printer are for Win Vista. HP is terrible for updating their drivers for new OS's. You are most likely out of luck trying to get this printer working with Win 8. It was probably difficult if not impossible getting it to work in Win 7.

If HP is world famous for anything, it's their horrible software and Driver Support.
It's infamous among the Technical Community. I'm surprised it's not just as infamous among the common user.

My advise to anyone with HP printer problems, is get rid of that DOG and get a real printer.

Years ago, when I got started in this business, there were two companies in the printer marketplace.
There was IBM and Epson. IBM is since GONE, but Epson remains a mainstay in the printer world.

From my standpoint as an old and very experienced Technician, why anyone would buy an HP printer is beyond my comprehension. So I have just one word for anyone with HP printer problems.....
and that one word is EPSON! Eh? Their printers are GREAT and their software in even better.

I am sure there is a way to make it work, just do not know how. In Windows 7 was already tricky to add this printer. I do not understand why HP don't give support, because if I have to trow out a perfectly good working Printer, than sure I'll buy an another brand.

That is the sentiment of many of us. I made that decision when I switched from XP to Win 7. I got rid of the HP printer and got something that I'm now using in Win 8. I have a Canon Pixma MP620, which is a few years old but works quite well in Win 8. I also know that both Epson and Kodak printers are working in Win 8.

I hated to get rid of a working printer as well, but I had to make a choice, Printer or OS.

As I've stated several times in other threads, look for no support from HP in regards to updating to Windows 8. I consider myself fortunate, & even then had to reduce HDD speed & features by changing from ACHI to IDE mode in the BIOS, to have a semi-smooth running desktop. It still gives BSOD's at least once per day.

Thing is, it's less than 3 years old. Nothing else with the HP brand on it, not as much as a sleeve of blank CD's, will enter my home again.

Like TM & Ted has stated, try another brand. In addition to their suggestions, Kodak is a good one also. The printer's full software package installed both on Win 8 CP & RP, & still gets regular updates.

I have an Epson Workforce 500, a great AIO printer.
Win 8 picked it right up with no external drivers being installed.
Epson has been the anchor of the printer industry, clear back to the DOS days.

The old guy who gave me the Workforce 500, had fallen prey to the ad's on TV
that the Kodak was the best thing since sliced bread. After two weeks he was
totally sick of it, so he tossed it and bought another Epson.

I've heard several sources say that the Kodak is a POC.
No personal experience here in that regard.

Good Luck!

I can personally vouch that Kodak's AIO printers are compatible with Windows 8, as that's my printer (Kodak ESP 3250 AIO). The Full program for the printer installed on the very first attempt, on 02/29. And has received two firmware/app updates since, direct from Kodak. Everything the printer is designed to do works on Win 8.

It's not an expensive printer, but it does all that I need of it, & has the lowest cost of ink replacements (brand name ink, I don't mess with refurb refills) of any printer that I've owned. Prints pictures as good as the chain drug stores does, either directly from the printer, or the computer, if touchup is needed.

Windows Update installed the initial print & scan drivers, then directed me to the Kodak site for the full install package (recommended, but optional). On Ubuntu 12.04 LTS/Linux Mint 13, all that's needed is to plug it in to a USB port & turn it on, it shows as available for use after a minute or so.

Note that I'm not a Kodak salesman, I'm only reporting that the printer has installed & running perfectly on two separate computers running 8 RP, & CP prior. That was a shocker in itself, I didn't expect to have full function on 8 CP, but I did. So that's four generations of Windows that it runs on (XP, Vista, 7 & 8). For $99 + tax, printer, starter inks & 30 pack of genuine Kodak photo paper (4" x 6"), I felt it to be a good deal. I've noticed that the newer generations costs less at Wal Mart (budget model, like mine is).

I wished whoever tossed the printer that TM mentioned did so by my door, now having 4 working computers, could use another one. May have to consider upgrading my router to one that has a USB port for printing access to all computers.

Print driver does not change much when you migrate from Windows 7 to Windows 8. go to hp.com website and click Support to search for driver.

Good Luck on that one! My HP AIO desktop shipped with Windows 7, but the only driver support that I have is from MS. None of the original drivers works, no matter what mode I've tried to install with.

HP only wants more cash from it's customers.

I traded in my HP Photosmart Premium AIO printer because of the fact that HP will not update the drivers for it. My new printer is a Canon MX892 AIO which runs beautifully on Windows 8 RP.

I do run Windows 8 RP on a HP dv4-2160us laptop. It does run fine but as Cat pointed out none of the HP drivers will install. The MS drivers are making it work.

The bottom line is stay away from HP products until/if they start updating their drivers for new OS's. HP really wants people to throw out a perfectly good computer and printer designed for a previous OS and buy new, compatible products.

I won't play this game!

Neither will I, Duffy! This is the LAST HP that will enter my door. If they chose to, they could supply drivers to work with at least the next available OS. But they won't. They won't even give me an updated BIOS to upgrade my CPU to a hyper-threaded one, though I know that they have such available.

Thing is, my MSI notebook shipped with a driver CD included. With that, & no special actions needed to do so, I could install ALL of my OEM drivers & apps. Every last one of them, even Norton Internet Security if I wished.

If one OEM can do this, the rest can. For these corporations, this isn't rocket science, they have the available resources. They are in the never ending chase of the almighty US dollar. For those in this practice, including HP, I don't expect it to change.

Cat, I have a webcam on that laptop. Several times I have tried to download the HP Windows 7 driver for it. The last time I tried it in compatibility mode, 1st attempt was based on XP SP3 and the last attempt was made on Windows 7 mode. It failed to install both times. Then I received an error message saying the program is incompatible with Windows 8. Bottom line is I have a non-functioning webcam on that laptop right now unless I reinstall Windows 7 on it.

My former HP printer would only print not scan with the MS drivers installed. I try to scan all my docs into the computer to get rid of clutter and safety as well. For me not having the ability to scan was the last straw. I held out some hope that HP would issue a Windows 8 compatible driver after Windows 8 GA (10/26). But I came to the conclusion that I am deluding myself. My new Canon is a much better printer.

I agree Cat that if HP wanted to issue new drivers for Windows 8 they easily could. Why do we have to wait on what could be a false hope that HP issues new drivers on 10/26?

It's all about boosting HP's profits, im afraid. I know it has been stated on this forum before but MS should have bought HP's computer division while they had the chance.

BTW, my Canon printer likes ink. What do fellow forum members think about using 3rd-party refillable cartridges on it?

Duffy, if you can get them refilled locally, it may be worth trying.

My luck with refurb inks were bad, no matter the source, be it eBay, Amazon, other online ink dealers & even local office stores. Some had been reused numerous times.

They didn't last as long, some refused to print even half full, & forget letting them set awhile w/o using it. They clog. I won't buy anymore of them, they are a waste of money.

Some Walgreen's stores refills certain brands of inks for a fixed price.

Thanks Cat for replying to my post. I am thinking of buying refillable ink cartridges and bulk ink to do the job myself. My concern is that the bottles of ink might go bad after sitting around for a up to a year. Here's a link to what I am thinking of buying. I've seen these ink refill kits, but have no experience with them. Looks like a great value for the money, make sure that all instructions are followed.

And make sure there's a money back guarantee on the product. Use a charge card or PayPal for consumer protection, if possible.

TM and I have had great success with InkSell.com (http://www.inksell.com/). Probably not as cheap as refillable ink, but not nearly as much of a problem and/or potential mess.

Thanks for the link, Ted! I tried another service, sometime back, problem was, after a few months they stated that the manufacturer, not them, were responsible for replacement.

InkSell.com's three year Free replacement, with return shipping on their dime, sounds plenty fair to me. I may have to pull out my unused Dell Photo Printer 720 for a second printer. Local replacements & other services, as I described above, has been not good for me.

I can't understand why a company would sell a consumer a product, back it with a one year warranty, then state it's not on their backs to honor it. Especially when this isn't given up front, nor any address to the manufacturer. STAY AWAY from InkJet Superstore.com, this is whom I'm referring to.

I'll give this one a shot. Thanks again.

I placed an order with Printer Ink and Inkjet Cartridges - InkSell.com (http://inksell.com) because of Medico's recommendation and inksells free shipping and long term warranty. I was afraid refillable bulk ink could be a mess. This seems to be a good compromise. I hope!

Thanks for the heads up!

There were 7 or 8 posts here from the same member to jack up his post count. They have all been deleted.

And you banned him for weeks...
That was the guide How to manage to use the mentioned printer with Windows 8, which meant to be at the place of your post (and the only real help in this topic):
Seems linking still not allowed here, so those who need the guide; Go into Google and type: How to add HP Laserjet 1010 / 1012 / 1015 Printer to Windows 8

There are correct ways to post responses to threads that do not involve jacking up a post count as you have just shown. And a 1 week ban is not "weeks". If anyone does not follow the rules they all get the same treatment.

Any further posts whining about a just punishment will result in further and more permanent responses.

Hi there,

Fresh install of windows 8 Beta 64 bit on my PC and every part works quite well but...

Is there a widows 8 driver for HP laser-jet 1012 printer?

Any help in this would be highly appreciated.

I got my old HP 1012 to print using Win 8. Here's the story:

I've just upgraded a Thinkpad X230T from Win 7 to Win 8. The last hurdle was the HP Laserjet 1012 printer which worked normally under Win7 using the Universal Print Driver and DOT4_001 port. After upgrading to Win 8 the printer wouldn't print.

I removed any old 1012 devices showing in Device Manager

Then I plugged in the 1012 to a USB port and turned it on

Then I opened 'View devices and printers' in Control Panel

Then clicked on Add a Printer

Then in the next window I clicked on 'The printer that I want isn't listed'

I then selected the 'Add a local printer...' option and clicked next

Then I selected the 'Use an Existing port' and selected the USB001 (Virtual printer port for USB) and clicked Next

In the list of printers I selected HP and Laserjet 3055 PCL5 and slected Next (as this driver works in Win 7)

Then in the next window I selected Next without changing the printer name and the driver was installed.

In the next window I selected to not the share the printer

In the next window I selected 'Print a test page' and nothing happened. So I thought that's it.

I happened to plug in a USB HDD to look at some files and then removed it. The test page (which was waiting in the print queue) printed OK!

I couldn't believe it.

I could now print anything. I turned the printer off/on. Rebooted the Thinkpad and the old 1012 just prints normally.

Hope this works for all HP 1012 users

I just got my first B&W cartridge from that same company today, with a 10% off coupon on my next purchase.

They have a box of 5 (2 color, 3 B&W) cartridges for about the same price as I pay for a Kodak box that has one of each. Free Shipping, & that 10% will make it less. That's a lot of ink for $32, plus a 90 day cash back guarantee + a 3 year warranty against defects, that's plenty of time for me to use the entire package.

The single one that I ordered, was just to see how good the inks are.

Hello
Although not one size fits all and I have dispensed this advice to another person in this forum, I had great success with HP>
I do not know if this works but I had problems with my HP AIO going from Win 7 to 8.
Only certain features functioned.
I tried individual drivers to not avail.
Finally I went to HP, entered my printers stats and downloaded a comprehensive 32 MB installation.
It has worked well since. I think it uninstalled the old and reinstalled the new.
