I know that 8.1 final is out; but I still have a copy of Windows 8.1 preview, downloaded in August or September 2013. Is it possible to reinstall it and run it with the test product key for the 90 days? Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks, catilley1092. That answers my question. I don't mind the 7 weeks, and I'll also consider Windows 8.1 Enterprise. Appreciate the link.

For whatever OS that you want to install, whether for testing purposes or as a full time OS, there is no replacement for proper planning. Always think, "What if.......".
Even write them down, all the things that could go wrong with an install.
A power failure during the install is the first thing that comes to mind.

I wanted to make the jump from Windows XP to Win-8.1 on an 8 yr. old Dell Laptop, that came out with XP Home.
But putting 8.1 on such an old and small PC is iffy at best, so I set out to protect my XP install against all odds.

I first partitioned the little hard drive and then backed up my XP install, in a compressed Backup File, using Ghost 11.5, to the second partition. With that backup done and verified, I felt secure in starting the 8.1 install.

The installer had to re-format the C partition which was in FAT-32 format. The hardest part of the whole install was getting it done without a Microsoft Account. But that too, is do'able. Now 8.1 is running just GREAT on that 8 yr old laptop with just 2 GB of ram. It might even be running faster than XP did. Windows 8.1 even took care of connecting to the internet. I've installed a bunch of my favorite programs and not one of them is having any problems, running on Win-8.1.

Installing a new OS can be error free, if the proper care is taken to preserve the old OS and all your data files.

Cheers Mates, and Happy Holidays!

Thanks, TechnoMage. Guess what I needed to know is: Does Microsoft allow reinstalling a Windows 8.1 Preview even though you can no longer download it from their site? Meanwhile I found out: It works. I've got my installation of Windows 8.1 running again, with no problem, on a VHD, in dual boot with Windows 7.

You can install it as many times as you want in as many PCs as you have. It's has a generic key which everyone else is using.
