Default Windows 8.1 store wont work

when i use the windows store after i installed windows 8.1 , the store opens up and gives me the message that it is not compatible with the windows 8 version i have. I really want to have this fixed because there are some great apps on here.

During the Beta Testing days of Windows 8, we repeated the warning (at least once a day) to never install a new version of W-8 over the top of an earlier version, or over an earlier Windows version, like Win-7.

Those who ignored that warning, had varying results, but most of it BAD.

Apparently, that warning should be repeated today.

I've only done one upgrade install in my life that worked well, and that was the upgrade from Windows 98 to Windows XP. I believe that was in 2001, and I've done only CLEAN Installs since then, without any problems.
A clean install is usually the best bet.

    Good Luck!

Where did you get your computer from?

If you have a water mark on your screen, that's a clear indication of a preview release or an illegal copy of windows . A legitimate copy of windows will not have that watermark. So something is afoot here.

With the preview versions of 8/8.1, a lot of the store functions didn't work correctly or work at all. Which is another indicator of a preview release or an illegal copy of windows.

    I'm just trying to remember......

To get the upgrade version of 8.1 from the store, don't you have to already have a certain version of 8.0?

I seem to remember someone saying that not all versions can be upgraded via the store.

I just install every new version CLEAN to a blank hard drive and don't have any of that upgrade problem.
Upgrades have long been a problem.

Yep...the only way to upgrade from the store is to have 8 or 8 Pro...no other way to upgrade....from the Store. And there's no watermark either.

To upgrade from 7 you have to use the 8.1 upgrade assistant and then purchase the upgrade.....which there is not watermark. Or buy the 8.1 OEM/Retail version from a retail store...like BestBuy or Walmart.

Upgrade to Windows 8.1 from Windows 7 - Microsoft Windows

I have some serious doubts as to the veracity of the OP post....it's the comment about the watermark that I have a problem with.

    Pssssst! There's a watermark remover!

But, it won't legalize an otherwise Illegal install, nor will it activate one.
You still need a legal KEY to activate an install, of any OS.

Many Graphics come with a watermark, and removing it can greatly improve the looks of the Graphic.

Why would legitimate users need to do that?

Cool Re: Windows 8.1 store wont work

    Sorry about that.
Many pictures and graphics come with a watermark and I've used a Watermark Remover several times to clean up an otherwise unattractive picture. All the beta test versions of W-8 that we ran, legally, had those nasty looking watermarks. Removing them just seemed like the thing to do, to improve the looks of our desktops.*

    * In no way did I mean to imply that just removing the version watermark would legalize an otherwise Illegal version of any OS. It won't, and the illegal version will still time out, and will not get any critical updates.

As long as there have been Personal Computers, there have been PC's sold with illegal versions of some OS on them. It's really not to the benefit of the user, to buy such a PC. The PC may just time out and quit running the OS. And it cannot get upgrades or fixes to critical problems. The user may also get pop-ups, warning them that the OS is illegal.

I hope that somewhat covers my comment about Watermark Removers. Eh?

Some great info there arthur dent but as the OP doesn't give any system specs or any specifics for that matter, it's all just one big guessing game at this point in time.

None the less, great links, I hope it helps the OP.
