Default How to Migrate System to another hard drive (SSD/HDD) without Reinstalling Windows?

    Why need “migrate OS” feature?

Depending on your needs, of course, it should meet your requirements. If there is a free solution that can optimize the performance of the current machine easily, why don’t we give this a try? Usually, there are two cases that need to migrating operating system. One is migrating OS to SSD to get better performance. The other is replacing the smaller system drive with a larger one.

As hardware price goes down every day, more and more people begin to use SSD drives. When you get a brand new SSD, you can do a fresh install. A complete system reinstallation is I/O intensive and clean. But it it is really a boring and time-consuming process. And I think you would like to avoid having to buy a new OS, because your computer built recently and it doesn’t have any problem, it can not be better if you can migrate the OS to SSD without reinstalling Windows, programs, games and so on.

Besides, in the past, you may have a small system drive, as time goes on, the system increasingly lack of disk space, system runs slower. To optimize the performance of the current machine you need to replace the smaller system drive with a larger hard drive.

Enabling AHCI mode after migrate OS to SSD

Usually, our Windows is installed in IDE mode, but SSD need AHCI mode for faster performance. Once you enable that in the BIOS during Windows boot up, the OS will crash. There is a way to safely enable AHCI mode. Here we go:

    1) Run the Registry Editor (regedit.exe)
    2) Navigate to the location:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Msahci
    3) Set the "Start" value to 0 (zero)
    4) Restart computer go into the BIOS-> configuration->change the disk mode to "AHCI" (IDE is set as default commonly). Save the new BIOS configuration and restart so that Windows boots.
When Windows starts, it will detect the change, load new disk drivers, and does one more reboot to start up with them.
    5) Install the latest driver of your motherboard.
Note: This method only works in Windows 7, Windows XP could not support.
If your CPU is based on AMD platform, you need to do another step, download the “AMD RAIDXpert” from AMD official website, then log in it and turn on NCQ mode. This is important.
If your CPU is based on Intel platform, you need no to do this, the NCQ mode is turned on autonomic when you change ide to ahci and install the latest driver of motherboard.

Migrate OS to SSD with magic software

After deciding to use an SSD/HDD to optimize computer performance, we may face another problem: how to migrate the system to it? The only thing we need to do is to get a software that can transfer the system to another disk. There are many software you can choose, but only two software can directly migrate the system to another disk: Paragon Migrate OS to SSD and AOMEI Partition Assistant. The former one is an excellent system migration tool, but chargeable. While Partition Assistant is a professional partition manager that contains system migration feature. Personally, I’d like to recommend Partition Assistant, because it is free of charge and it also can be used to resize volumes at the same time . Here we are going to discuss how to migrate OS to SSD safely and easily.

    Let's begin
In the first place, we need to free download and install Partition Assistant Home Edition.

Step1: Launch this software. On the main interface, click "Migrate OS to SSD or HDD" under “Wizards” in the left-side.

Step 2: Click "Next" to continue in the pop-up window.

Step 3: In the next dialog box, select the unallocated space on SSD, and then click "Next".

Step 4: In the pop-up window, we can extend system partition or change the location and the drive letter of it.

Step 5: Click “Apply” on the toolbar to commit the operations, before that, we can preview the whole changes of the disk.

Hi, I have installed Win 8 on my HDD but in GPT format (not in MSR), although my HDD is 1 TB only. This was the "recommended" setting. However, now when I try a disc migration from HDD to SSD, Partition manager is throwing an error that migrating OS from GPT drive is not allowed. What can I do to fix this?

    Hello,

Sorry to reply you late because of we just come back to our office and finished our holiday of “Chinese New Year”.
About this problem I felt sorry. The current version can not do such a migration while the disk is GPT style and the operating system is Windows 8.
To solve this problem if your SSD has enough space to contain all the data on the source disk, you can first delete all the partitions on SSD and then does a disk clone. Or you can try our backup and restore software-AOEMI Backupper. Image your system and then restore it to SSD. You can download the software from this link:
Download free backup restore software ? AOMEI Backupper Freeware.

    Best Regards,
    Kim

Hi, I have installed AOEMI Home Edition and I am trying to migrate my Windows 8 OS after getting a SSD. I launch the application and selected the unallocated space and hit apply. A message comes up to say that it will reboot so that the operation can be completed in the Pre-OS state. It reboots and nothing happens and my PC just boot into Windows 8. I didn't get any error message either. I am using version 5.1.2 which is supposed to support Windows 8....

    Thanks in advance

    -Johnny

I want to add that the tools works perfectly for Windows 7 (I bought 2 SSDs, one for each PC.) it is just that in Windows 8 it won't go into the Pre-OS mode to migrate the partition.
